Shavano Park December & January Oak Trimming

sam-fb

December and January oak tree trimming season thanks to the City of Shavano Park is now conveniently in sync with Chipper Day and Brush Pick-up. You have to be cautious when trimming your trees. The oaks in Shavano Park believe it or not make up a huge chunk of your homes value.  According to the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers, “A mature tree can often have an appraised value of between $1,000 and $10,000.” A Management Information Services/ICMA study says, “Landscaping, especially with trees, can increase property values as much as 20 percent.” So as your Shavano Park neighbor please take care of your trees and help prevent damage to the neighborhood we all live and love.

Here are a couple ways to prevent wounds and damage to our beautiful trees. Wounds can include any damage caused by wind, hail, vehicles, construction, squirrels, birds or pruning. Research has shown that both oak wilt fungal mats on infected oaks and insects that carry oak wilt spores are most prevalent in the spring. Please see below how you can reduce the risk of fungal spread when pruning.

  • You should always make sure that your tree expert paints fresh wounds on oaks, including pruning cuts and stumps, with wound dressing or latex paint immediately after pruning or live tree removal at all times of the year.
  • Make sure that all the pruning tools being used have been cleaned with bleach solution between sites and/or trees.
  • Make sure you purchase a permit from City Hall before to avoid pruning or wounding of oaks during the spring (currently defined as February 1 through June 30).
